Reversing the Mindless Migration of Youth to Urban Centres

Published: November 7, 2020

There is a saying in Marathi “Durun Donger Sazre”. Which means the mountain appears green and beautiful from a distance. But it is something else when you are near it. The equivalent English saying is “The grass is always green on the other side”. Why am I quoting these idioms? I would like to examine the issue of migration of rural youth to metro towns and cities in search of gainful employment and whether it has resulted in their better living and upliftment. In addition, I would like to examine if village life helps in better health, longevity and congenial family life. And lastly I would examine how we can stop the mindless migration to urban centres by making agriculture a more lucrative alternative. Also would mention the innovative yet traditional approach of Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) and its seminal role in halting the migration.
